The town was "stress-free" because the only married man was Otis, and he was a drunk! WRONG.
This is another statement I see people make on Facebook on a regular basis, but it is completely wrong. Yes, Otis is the "town drunk," and yes he is married while Andy, Barney and several other prominent characters are not, but there are plenty of married couples in Mayberry. I mean, come on, if there were no married couples, where did all the kids come from? So, in addition to Otis, let's explore a bunch of those married couples and in what season and episode you can see them.
1. Mayor Pike - This was the first Mayor shown on the show. Unfortunately the actor who played Mayor Pike died in 1961 so he was replaced by Mayor Stoner at the start of season 3. We know Mayor Pike is married because in S1E13 ("Mayberry Goes To Hollywood") his teenage daughter (Juanita) is forced to sing for the movie scouts, and in S1E16 ("The Beauty Contest"), the Mayor talks about his WIFE riding out on a horse and singing opera during the annual Mayberry Founders's Day Celebration, which he despises.
2. Mayor Stoner (Played by Parley Baer) - This is the second character to be shown as the Mayor of Mayberry, and he doesn't get along with Andy. (He thinks he is Andy's boss, even though Andy is the elected County Sheriff, so he wouldn't answer to the town Mayor.) In any event, in S3E12 ("The Bed Jacket"), it's Aunt Bee's birthday, and she wants a "bed jacket" that she saw in a store window. Unfortunately it was the last one, and Mayor Stoner has already bought it for his WIFE. Andy knows how badly Aunt Bee wants the jacket, so he makes a deal with the Mayor to trade his fishing rod (the one that always catches fish) to the Mayor for the bed jacket so he can give it to Aunt Bee.
3. Floyd Lawson (Barber) - In S1E15 ("Those Gossipin' Men") a shoe salesman comes to town and stays at the local hotel for a few days. The men of Mayberry are convinced that he is secretly a talent scout for a TV show and they line up outside of his hotel room to audition for him, while supposedly ordering shoes. One of those in attendance for the audition is Floyd the Barber, who brings his SON (Randall) to play the saxophone. (Floyd's WIFE's name by the way is Melba and Floyd mentions his other son, Norman. So yes, he is not only married, but he has two sons!) * This is one of the many contradictions of the show over the years, as we never see or hear of Floyd's wife or children after this episode, and in a later episode (S3E9 - "Floyd the Gay Deceiver") we find that Floyd has been sending pen-pal letters to a woman in a "lonely hearts club" as sort of a long distance romance, and is troubled when she decides to come visit him because he has been exaggerating about his wealth and he's afraid she will see who he "really is."
4. Sam Muggins - This is the famous "Christmas Episode" (S1E11) where Sam Muggins gets arrested for moon shining right around Christmastime. Andy lets Sam out for the holidays so he can spend it with his WIFE and two kids, with the promise that Sam will return to finish his sentence after Christmas. Unfortunately, the "town grouch," Ben Weaver of Weaver's Department Store wants Sam to remain in jail. (Ben is mad that Sam was selling illegal hooch, when, as he puts it, "He's interfering with my selling of spirits." This is interesting to say the least, as Mayberry has always been described as a "dry county," so how can Ben legally sell liquor?) Anyway, Andy gets so mad that Ben is making him keep Sam in jail that he decides to have a Christmas celebration at the Sheriff's Office, with Ellie and Aunt Bee cooking up a delicious dinner. At this point, we see Sam's WIFE and two children join him in the jail cell, and old Ben eventually "comes around" by getting himself arrested and once inside the office, gives everyone in attendance Christmas gifts.
5. The Scobeys - In S1E28 ("Andy Forecloses") Sheriff Taylor is forced (as part of his job) to serve an eviction notice on the Scobey family (Lester Scobey, his WIFE Helen, and their daughter Mary) because they are behind in their mortgage payments to "mean old" Ben Weaver. Eventually things get straightened out and Ben even hires Lester to work in his department store. (Incidentally, the same actor that played Sam Muggins in the Christmas Episode also appears here as Lester Scobey.)
6. The Boones - In S1E18 ("Andy the Marriage Counselor"), Andy and Barney have to constantly deal with a married couple that are always disturbing their neighbors with their ongoing domestic arguments. Eventually, Andy says he will arrest both Fred and his WIFE Jennie Boone, if they don't start being nice to each other. They do, but after a bit of time they find out they are happier when they are fighting than when they are forcibly nice to one another so they just go back to the way things were.
7. The Winklers - In S3E21 ("Opie & The Spoiled Kid") we learn that there is another family in town with a son that's Opie's age (Arnold Winkler), and is spoiled rotten by his parents. When he gets his bicycle taken away by Andy and Barney for riding it on the sidewalk, he throws a temper tantrum in the Sheriff's Office assuming his father will order the Sheriff to return his bike. That's not what happens though, and Mr. Winkler realizes that it's time to stop giving his son everything he wants. Now in this episode we do not see Arnold's mother, but unless she is deceased we have to assume that she is still alive, meaning his father has a WIFE, which is yet another married couple in Mayberry.
8. The Silbys - In S1E8 ("Opie's Charity") there is a side-story where Annabelle Silby's husband (Tom), who has been dead for two years, suddenly appears to be alive and well and returns to Mayberry! As it turns out Tom Silby was a drunk, and one time while he was out of town on a bender, he decided to stay where he was because he believed his WIFE was better off without him, so to save face, she told everyone that he was killed by a taxi cab. In a shock to Annabelle, he returns to Mayberry and he and his wife are now happily living together once again now that he has given up drinking.
9. Charlene Darling & Dud Walsh - In S4E25 ("Divorce, Mountain Style") Charlene Darling seeks to get a divorce from her HUSBAND (Dud Walsh) so she can marry Sheriff Taylor. Fortunately, Barney goes to the library and finds some old folklore that says the new betrothed (Andy) is cursed if they see a white horse with a rider dressed in black riding from east to west. Barney makes that happen, and Briscoe Darling says Darlene can't marry Andy because it has been proven that he is cursed. (Incidentally, in this episode Bob Denver (Of the "Gilligan" fame) plays Dud Walsh, whereas the character was played by Hoke Howell in other episodes.)
10. Sam Becker & His Wife - In S01E29, we learn of "Quiet Sam" Becker, the farmer that keeps some unusual hours such as when he plows his farm at night instead of during the day like everyone else. This prompts Barney to get suspicious and say to Andy, "Maybe he's growing wacky weed, you know, Marijuana?" (Yes, they actually use the term "marijuana" on the show this one and only time.) As it turns out, Sam's WIFE is pregnant and expecting to give birth at any moment, so he has to juggle his farmer's duties to be ready for it. As luck will have it, the delivery comes while Andy and Barney are at his farm, and Andy ends up performing the birthing duties himself, which causes the new parents to name the boy after him.
11. Emmett & Martha Clark. The character of Emmett was introduced in the last season to replace Floyd Lawson. (The actor that played Floyd was in bad health and died not long after the show went off the air.) "Emmett's Fix-It-Shop" was located where Floyd's Barber Shop had been. Emmett's WIFE was featured in several episodes.
12. Rafe Hollister - In S3E20 ("Rafe Hollister Sings") you can see Rafe and his WIFE talking about his role in the upcoming singing competition.
13. Orville Hendricks - The Butter & Egg Man. In S5E27 ("Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau"), Aunt Bee has told Andy that she is dating someone and when pressed for a name, she say's, "it's Mr. Hendricks, the Butter & Egg Man." The problem is that Aunt Bee is just making that up so Andy will stop worrying about her, but as it turns out, Mr. Hendricks not only has a WIFE, but a teenage son as well and that all comes out when Andy decides to pay Mr. Hendricks a visit.
14. Opie & Friends. In this scene from S02E14 ("One Punch Opie"), you can see Opie Taylor and five of this friends. Otis Campbell and his wife didn't have any kids, so if there were no other married couples in Mayberry, where did all these friends of Opie's come from, not to mention all the children we see in episodes that take place in Ms. Crump's elementary school classroom?
As you can see, there is evidence of there being many married couples on the show. I'm sure there were others, so if you can think of any, feel free to shoot me an email and I will add them to this list.
